Golden Gate Canyon Road (Colorado State Highway 46) runs between Highway 119 and Highway 93. The two-lane route features numerous tight twists and turns, has few paved turnouts, and it is a fairly popular road that often results in lines of vehicles behind slower RVs. The pavement is very smooth, and the route is generally safe for RV travel, though the curvature and traffic can make navigation demanding; travel may be uncomfortable for drivers who prefer straighter roads or who are averse to vehicles queued behind them.

This is a gorgeous drive! But it is demanding due to lots of relatively tight twists and turns, which require your full attention when you’re towing. Just follow the recommended speed limits at these points and you’ll be fine. That said, most traffic on this road does NOT drive the speed limit, and if you’re towing, you’re highly likely to find a queue of eager beavers waiting behind you. Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of great turnouts along this road. When I see big, wide, paved turnouts, I always happily take them when someone is behind me. On this road, there are a handful of turnouts that are big and wide, but none were paved. Most looked pretty bumpy, with relatively sharp drops from the pavement of the main road to the dirt and gravel of the turnout. I avoided these until I saw one that looked nice and smooth.
If you’re comfortable with the twists and turns, I highly recommend this road.
